So – your main spec is resto, for whatever activity you’d like to be doing – raiding, dungeons, etc. What about your other spec? What’s the best spec to have as your secondary spec?
Another resto spec
In raiding, sometimes you may need to run a second resto spec for particular fights. For example, many druids had a Healing-Touch-centric build for Heroic Anub’arak in Trial of the Crusader. Or, perhaps you’d like a raid healing spec and a tank healing spec – without having to go pay to rearrange talents and glyphs. Or a spec for mana-intensive fights. Consider:
- Raid healing vs tank healing
- Raid healing vs dungeon healing
- 25man vs 10man
- Heavy regen
- High haste
- Fight-specific
- (and so on)
Obviously you can only do this if you’re happy to sacrifice your second spec and not have a DPS, tanking or PvP spec at the ready. That will depend on how much PvE healing you do, and how often you need a different spec.
Balance spec
If you choose balance as your second spec, then you already havethe advantage of being able to share gear between your two specs. If you’re playing balance in raids, you’ll need to gear slightly differently (to reach hit caps, and to focus more on crit, less on regen etc), but if you’re just popping into moonkin to do some dungeons, farming, or quests, then your resto gear can be adequate. So the benefit here is that you won’t necessarily need two entire sets of gear in your bags.
Feral spec (tank)
Perhaps you’d like to tank in your spare time – or be available if your guild or friends need a tank. Obviously you’ll need a set of tank gear in your bags or bank to be able to do this.
Feral spec (kitty)
As above, maybe you like doing some kitty DPS now and then. Also handy for farming/questing. But, again, you’ll need twice the gear.
PvP healer
A lot of people spend their spare time PvPing, and use their second spec slot to house their PvP spec.
